2005 May | The Bull Speaks!

Here’s a copy of today’s email to the huzzies over at Gold Star Mothers. I sincerely hope all of my readers are doing likewise.

America is still waiting on that apology to Ms. Lagman.

While you’re at it, you should include that Gold Star with the apology.

In case you’ve not noticed, we bloggers are a particularly diversified and tenacious bunch. We will not go away and we will not forget. The negative press will continue until you do the right thing and honor Ms. Lagman – whether or not she has an active application. She deserves it as the Mother of an American Hero.

Still disgusted with you all,

Mark T. Jones

Keep up the pressure!

w00t! The Bull’s view has been picked up by yet another blogger our there. This time it is Tom Watson over at Tom Watson: My Dirty Life and Times

The following is an excerpt from his post “The Two Soldiers”.

Meanwhile, the blogosphere is getting on this as well – the reaction is pretty well unified, no matter what the politics of the blogger. Here’s an excerpt from a letter Navy veteran (and blogger) Mark Jones:

“I find myself wondering about this incident and have written on my blog questioning how many mothers of black Americans killed in combat may have been denied Gold Star status as well in times not-so distant. After all, it is but a small step from the xenophobic reaction of yours towards Ms. Lagman and old fashioned racial bigotry.”

You can read Mark’s full post here – well worth it.

Thanks for the link, Tom! Also for the comments on the Gold Star Mothers dishonor. If we keep up the pressure we can change this bunch and their beloved “rules” to be truly fair to ALL mothers of our Fallen Heroes.  End of Article

Today I recieved no less than three copies of the same story in my email. It isn’t the first time either. This story comes around every month or so. It started in 2003.

There are bunches of these things. So many in fact that I’ve setup a new catagory on this blog called “Email Stuffers“. This particular one is about Ben Stein’s Last Column in E! Online. With the current war there has been a rerun of this “email stuffer”, so I went to Snopes.com to see once and for-all if it is a true story. It is, after all, a grand column that makes a point. Here is a bit of what Snopes has to say about it.

Claim: Ben Stein penned an essay about the nature of stardom.

Status: True.

For several years (through the end of 2003), Mr. Stein penned a regular column for E! Online, and the excerpt quoted above is taken from his final piece for that venue, published on 20 December 2003. He seized the occasion of his last column to muse on the nature of stardom, asking “How Can Someone Who Lives in Insane Luxury Be a Star in Today’s World?” and questioning whether actors and actresses who make huge sums of money and live in luxury should truly be considered “stars” or “heroes” in the modern era, especially in comparison to the “noncoms and officers who barely scrape by on military pay but stand on guard in Afghanistan and Iraq and on ships and in submarines and near the Arctic Circle [and] are anonymous as they live and die.”

Mr. Stein’s column evidently struck a chord with a good many readers, as it continues to be circulated widely via e-mail forwarding several months after its original publication.

GREAT! It’s true! While ol’ Ben is sometimes “out there” with his economic ideas, I’ve always loved listening to him and reading his material – even if I don’t agree. This time, though, I do agree. Totally! So much so that I’m going to post the portion of that column that is most often used as an “email stuffer” right here, right now.
Enjoy!

My blogging bro over at Frizzen Sparks, GrauMagus, sent me an email concerning a news story he had ran across. I’ll quote it in its sickening entirety in a moment, but first some words from Grau, a non-Pagan person, (Christian, I think. It’s never been an issue..). These are straight from our emails.
(Quoted with his permission.)

Grau’s email:

“You have GOT to read this.

[link below]

“Seems a Judge has decided in family court that a couple getting divorced can’t speak to their son about Wicca, even though that’s the religion BOTH of them practice and neither of them requested this at all.

“Our judicial system is completely screwed, and family court is an order of magnitude more jacked up than the rest….

My reply:
” Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Grau. I’m NOT surprised though. This has been the norm in the way Wiccans have been treated by the law. Even in the more accepting military, (imagine that!), I had to have my dog tags remade three times because they kept coming back with everything but “Wiccan” printed on them. First, they were “Baptist”, then they were “No Pref.”, finally after my CC walked with my recruit ass down to the shop they got it right. But I was “challenged” by the guys running the thing to prove it was legit.

“This is also why I couldn’t challenge my ex-wife for custody of my children even though she has proved to be a lousy mother. She wisely filed for divorce in Pickens Co. South Carolina. Had I fought and she had brought up my faith – even though she had known during our entire 15 year marriage – I would have had my rights to visitation stripped by the court. Forget custody! Had I proved her an unfit mother the kids would have went to foster care. THAT is the law in South Carolina. She knew it. She had me by the short-hairs. Pagans are considered not-quite-human in some state courts even today.

Thanks, Grau.”

This is a shame. A damnedable SHAME!!

It burns me up that the bitches over at American Gold Star Mothers have the audacity to deny ANY mother of a Fallen American Hero. If you’re reading this, write to these human waste-bags and tell them to go straight to hell! You can catch them at this address, though the cowards will only send you an automated reply…

Here’s the latest.

YONKERS, N.Y. â€??? A Yonkers woman has dropped her bid to become a Gold Star Mother. Ligaya Lagman, (Gods bless her…), was denied acceptance by the organization of mothers who have lost sons and daughter in combat because she is not a U.S. citizen.

Bob Foster of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Eastchester tells the Journal News that Lagman is shaken up by all the attention she has gotten and she wants to stay on the sidelines. But she wants to see the rules changed so other mothers are not turned down like she was.

Lagman came to the United States from the Philippines in 1983. She is a permanent resident but not a citizen. Foster says she is busy caring for her husband, who is seriously ill. Lagman’s son, Anthony, was killed in a firefight in Afghanistan last year at age 26.

Veterans and politicians, among others, called for American Gold Star Mothers to change its policy to allow noncitizen mothers of fallen soldiers into the organization, after reports that Lagman had been excluded from the group.

The Gold Star’s national monument is being built in Putnam County.

If this don’t piss you off, then there is NO American blood in you!

Here’s my latest email to the huzzies:

I’ve not forgotten your shameful actions vs. Ligaya Lagman. I’m keeping a record of the on-going shame on my blog.

One question: How do you sleep at night?

Disgusted,

For the record, the following is a true copy of the email I sent to American Gold Star Mothers. I urge all my readers to do the same. Stand behind the troops. Stand with their moms!

To: goldstarmoms@yahoo.com
Subject: Your Failure

American Gold Star Mothers,

I am an American Veteran and I am writing to you concerning you treatment of Ligaya Lagman. Her 27-year-old son, Army Staff Sgt. Anthony Lagman (American Hero), was killed last year in Afghanistan. Yet your organization has seen fit to deny her full Gold Star Mother status. Non-citizen or not, she is the mother of one of our Fallen Heroes. It isn’t even as if she lives in some far off land. The woman is a permanent resident and a tax-payer!

I find myself wondering about this incident and have written on my blog questioning how many mothers of black Americans killed in combat may have been denied Gold Star status as well in times not-so distant. After all, it is but a small step from the xenophobic reaction of yours towards Ms. Lagman and old fashioned racial bigotry.

You dare post on your website the following:
“American Gold Star Mothers was incorporated in Washington, DC and granted
a Federal Charter by the ninety-eighth Congress. That was in 1929, and in the years
since, through times of war and times of peace, this organization of American mothers
has changed, grown, and always been there when needed.”

I submit that you have not either changed, nor grown. Further, I am writing to my Congressmen and Senators demanding that your Charter and any further funding be pulled immediately. I will also promote a letter writing campaign via bloggers nationwide to the same effect.

You owe Ligaya Lagman an apology. A public apology. There is no room in today’s America for such bigotry as you have shown in this case. Do the right thing. Change your rules, give Ms. Lagman the recognition she deserves, and join the rest of us in Honoring ALL of our Fallen Heroes.

Sincerely,

Mark T. Jones, US Navy Veteran
Mobile, AL

Granted, they dispute the federal funding. No matter. They STILL have much to answer for! This Nation is at war. We must stand behind the families – and in my mind especially the Mothers – of our Fallen. If we fail to do so we will have disgraced ourselves as a people.

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT:

Judith C. Young
National Service Officer
American Gold Star Mothers
Phone: 202-265-0991

May 27, 2005

Statement Regarding National Media Attention Concerning Ligaya Lagman And “The Denial Of A Gold Star?.

The term “gold star” is a term used to recognize the family member of a serviceman or servicewoman who has died in the line of service to their country. As protocol states, the Department of Defense presents to the family, a gold star lapel button, in accordance with each branch of the military’s protocol. The gold star lapel button is not issued by the American Gold Star Mothers, Inc.

As to the accusation that Mrs. Lagman’s application was denied does not tell the complete story. The application for membership with American Gold Star Mothers was received by the Department of New York. It was not completed or signed by the applicant, nor did it have the required copy of the death certificate and the payment of the first years dues. There were several inaccuracies on the application as to the dates required. A certified letter was mailed to Mrs. Lagman requesting the application be completed in full and returned for approval. To date, we have not heard from Mrs. Lagman, nor have we received any form of communication to the status of her membership application.

To say that the application has been denied is not an accurate statement.

It is also true that the constitution and bylaws of the organization’s founder, Mrs. Grace Darling Seibold, established in 1928, along with fellow charter members, named the organization ‘American Gold Star Mothers’.

In Article IV, Section 1 under Eligiblity and Membership states

“Natural Mothers, or citizens of the United States or the Territorial and Insular Possessions of the United States, at the time of their sons or daughters induction into the United States Armed Forces and died as a casualty, killed, captured, missing in action, or as a result of illness or injury received through engagement in the Armed Forces in WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, Afganistan, and other Strategic Areas.

On June 12, 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed and approved a charter for the American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. granted by the 98th Congress of the United States of America, which states under Powers, Section 2:

“American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. shall have only those powers granted to it though it’s bylaws and articles of incorporation filed in the state or states which is incorporated and subject to the laws of such state or states.?

As Congress has dictated above, by it’s issuance of the federal charter, by virtue of its name, shall be recognized as “American Gold Star Mothers, Inc.?.

In the article there is mention to the fact that the membership board voted and discriminated against Mrs. Lagman. It was not a vote taken for membership, nor a change in the constitution. It was only from an outside source that the discussion took place regarding an upcoming applicant situation, and at that time, the board decided not to make an exception to the rule without proper investigation.

American Gold Star Mothers is an all-volunteer 501.c.3 organization with no federal funding or benefits from any government agency. Its only means of income is from membership dues and donations. They are grateful for the outpouring of support from other Veterans Service Organizations over the years who have worked closely with the Mothers, and knows their only honorable intentions comes from the heart.

The Executive Board would like to take this opportunity to apologize for anything taken out of its context in the dissemination of information while being investigated by the media and improperly reported. They would also appreciate the time to seek a remedy to this situation and handle it internally so that the best interests of all, and to future Mothers, can be addressed.

American Gold Star Mothers have received threats, malicious accusations, and disturbing e-mails, phone calls, and faxes. This organization of moms joined to support each other and also to support the veterans who are fortunate to come home. They have spent the last 77 years devoting their time and energy in service to the Veterans Administration, volunteering in VA Hospitals and nursing homes, accruing millions of hours helping those who honorably served their country.

Thanks for the automated response. However, I still have serious issues with your group. Whether or not you are actually receiving Federal funds will be looked into my myself and many others. That set aside, you have still not explained the contradictions between your claims of “growth” and “change”, and the treatment of Ms. Lagman. I read your press release carefully – twice. Sounds like horse crap to me. I’ve been around the block enough to know the sound of someone scrounging for a quick answer and hiding behind verbiage.

Your auto-response also mentioned a story by the AP entitled “New Leader Says Gold Star May Change Rules“. Problem(s): It says “may” not “will”. Further, the story confirms that your Executive Board has voted down the change in rules. I’m sorry, but you have still not managed to cover a wide swath of shiny bare behind!

Offhand, I’d get busy putting my house in order if I were you, American Gold Star Mothers. The Nation is watching you. The Nation is not happy with what it sees.

Now here is a case of an organization that has taken taxpayer money and gone WAY too damned far out on a limb. This Veteran thinks it may be time to prune that particular limb…

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. ?? Everyone agrees that Ligaya Lagman is a Gold Star mother, part of the long line of mournful women whose sons or daughters gave their lives for their country. Her 27-year-old son, Army Staff Sgt. Anthony Lagman (American Hero), was killed last year in Afghanistan, but American Gold Star Mothers Inc., has rejected Lagman, a Filipino, for membership because ?? though a permanent resident and a taxpayer ?? she is not a U.S. citizen.

“There’s nothing we can do because that’s what our organization says: You have to be an American citizen,” national President Ann Herd said Thursday. “We can’t go changing the rules every time the wind blows.”

That explanation isn’t satisfying the war veterans who sponsored Lagman’s application, some other members of the mothers’ group or several members of Congress.

“It is disheartening that any mother of a soldier, sailor, airman or Marine who has died in the line of duty would be denied membership in an organization that honors the memory of fallen service men and women,” said Rep. Nita Lowey (search), whose district includes Lagman’s home in Yonkers.

Rep. Eliot Engel, who represents an adjoining district, said the group should change its rules immediately.

“Whatever the excuse, American Gold Star Mothers’ decision smacks of xenophobia and is in stark contrast to what Mrs. Lagman’s son fought and died for,” Engel said.

[Read the rest of this story here on Fox News.]

Man, this story pisses me off! Not only has this group of hags dissed the mother of an American Hero, they have forced ‘The Bull‘ to agree with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

I get the sinking feeling that if we look back into the records of this bunch we’ll find many more mothers that have been denied. Oh say, black mothers who lost sons in WWII, Korea, & Vietnam. After all, it isn’t too long a leap from xenophobia to old fashion racism.

This story makes me sick. If you are pissed off as much as I am, then write to this bunch of racist hags and let them know how you feel! their email address is: goldstarmoms@yahoo.com
They dare open their web page with this statement: “American Gold Star Mothers was incorporated in Washington, DC and granted a Federal Charter by the ninety-eighth Congress. That was in 1929, and in the years since, through times of war and times of peace, this organization of American mothers has changed, grown, and always been there when needed.”
Yet they can’t “change” or “grow” enough to honor EVERY mother now can they? Bah! As far as that Federal Charter goes, I submit that without an immediate change in rules and policy, complete with a public apology to Ligaya Lagman, we should demand that that Charter be pulled by Congress immediately.

Write to these so-called “Gold Star Mothers” and demand a change! Then write to your Senators and demand action. American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. took your money, they should then toe the line. The mothers of ALL American Heroes should be – WILL BE – honored equally!

It’s been a while since I posted something from Pop so I thought this would be good, especially considering recent news events and the current ‘conflicts’. If anyone out there knows who the true author of this piece is, please let me know. This person deserves a bunch of credit!

Author is unknown–but he has hit the right buttons.

America’s military can win wars. We’ve done it in the past, and I have absolute confidence that we’ll continue to do it in the future. We’ve won fights in which we possessed overwhelming technological superiority (Desert Storm), as well as conflicts in which we were the technical underdogs (the American Revolution). We’ve crossed swords with numerically superior foes, and with militaries a fraction of the size of our own. We’ve battled on our own soil, and on the soil of foreign lands — on the sea, under the sea, and in the skies. We’ve even engaged in a bit of cyber-combat, way out there on the electronic frontier. At one time or another, we’ve done battle under just about every circumstance imaginable, armed with everything from muskets to cruise missiles. And, somehow, we’ve managed to do it all with the wrong Army.

That’s right, America has the wrong Army. I don’t know how it happened, but it did. We have the wrong Army. It’s too small; it’s not deployed properly; it’s inadequately trained, and it doesn’t have the right sort of logistical support. It’s a shambles. I have no idea how those guys even manage to fight.

Now, before my brothers and sisters of the OD green persuasion get their fur up, I have another revelation for you. We also have the wrong Navy. And if you want to get down to brass tacks, we’ve got the wrong Air Force, the wrong Marine Corps, and the wrong Coast Guard.

Don’t believe me? Pick up a newspaper or turn on your television. In the past week, I’ve watched or read at least a dozen commentaries on the strength, size, and deployment of our military forces. All of our uniform services get called on the carpet for different reasons, but our critics unanimously agree that we’re doing pretty much everything wrong.

Ha! I’ve found my first bandwidth thief! Oh, I know there are more. I’ve got a good host backing me in my efforts to root out those that would have me pay for their website goodies! Thieves. Geez! It says plainly in every disclaimer I write that you may use any of my images or writings by simply asking first and giving proper credit where it is due. All you have to do with the images is host the bloody thing on your own website. What these guys do is code in a pic or post they like on your site into theirs using your URL. Then anytime their page is loaded, it draws the image from your files, using your bandwidth! Yeah, the ethereal stuff you pay for each month! Either it is ignorance or plain, malicious theft. I don’t know which and frankly don’t care.

After all, all they had to do was ask me. I’d give any help I’m capable of giving.

Anyhoo, the first one found is Banjo Jones over at Brazosport News who is/was ripping me off for bandwidth over a measly small image of Johnny Cash. Now, is that something worth being reported to your host for B/W Theft? I don’t think so, but that is exactly what has happened!

I write this in accordance with my own published Rules for this blog. Zero tolerance for foolishness. Further actions verses this character all depend on his response to my letters.

I’ve got Eric over at Myoptic Zeal to thank for my, or rather “our“, 15 seconds of fame.

Yesterday CNN did a small piece on the “Viagra for Sex Offenders” story where they mentioned Eric’s blog and his link to this one. They went on to mention ‘The Bull’s‘ take on the entire mess. Being not in the least modest, let me quote a portion of the transcript of JUDY WOODRUFF’S INSIDE POLITICS for you here…

WOODRUFF: According to a new report, dozens of convicted sex offenders in New York are taking Viagra, and Medicaid is paying the bill. The story is sparking a great deal of anger and getting a lot of attention in cyberspace.

Let’s check in now with CNN political producer Abbi Tatton, and Jacki Schechner, our blog reporter.

Hi, Jacki.

JACKI SCHECHNER, CNN BLOG REPORTER: Hi, Judy.

What does this mean? It means a lot of high-level sex offenders are getting Viagra, and you are paying for it. It’s outrage on all sides of the blogs

.

We start today at MyopicZeal.blogsome.com. This is Eric, who is a programmer in the Midwest. Named his blog, by the way, for the phrase “myopic zeal” that came out in the Rather-gate report. But he has a roundup of blog reaction to issues, and today he links to one blog called ondogriver.net.

This is Mark Jones, who is a political Independent. He’s a Navy veteran and has a story which he admits might be too much information, but says at one point he did need Viagra after surgery and he was unable to get it paid for because he’s a veteran under the care of the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical. Says that his doctor did give him a private prescription, but wondering if this means that America’s veterans are of a lower priority than convicted sex offenders.

(Entire transcript can be found here.)

What do you know! They got my name right and damned near got the complete address to my blog! Now that 15 seconds of broadcast transcript felt really good… For about the 15 minutes of fame one is allotted in this lifetime. Now it’s back to the grind.
