I thought I’d post this here just in case someone down here has not heard of it yet. We all used this religiously back home in the foothills of South Carolina.
It WILL NOT rust a bore. In fact it tends to protect the metal.
It WILL NOT harm your stock. I use it to clean the stocks of every BP gun I’ve built or worked on.
What it WILL do is immediately eat all the BP crud out of every groove of your barrel and lock with NO black gooy mess. In fact it comes out of the bore darned near the color it went in! Even smells good!
Mix 16 ounces of:
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Murphy’s Oil Soap (liquid)
- standard Hydrogen Peroxide
Due to the Peroxide the solution is photo-sensitive so store the bottles in a box or in dark bottles. If stored properly it well remain good indefinately.
Plug your vent or nipple, fill the bore, let it sit for a minute or two, and then unplug the vent or nipple and force the fluid out with a snug patch on your cleaning rod. You’ll find the first patch being darned near as clean as it went in! Use a cloth wet with the solution to wipe down your stock and lock.
You are done! Takes about five minutes to clean a filthy flintlock with this method. If it is going to be more than a couple of weeks before I shoot again I follow up with a bit of RIG grease on a patch.
Enjoy!
