2007 May | The Bull Speaks! - Part 2

Can you believe how fast this Alabama Bloggers thingy is takin’ off? Geez, I was stunned by the number of entries this week and more than a little proud that The Bull is once again hosting here at the Home Pasture. Welcome back, y’all!

Alabama.

She is a State that means many things to people, not just here but Nationwide. Both good things and just as many bad. The history of Alabama is rich and thick like a really good gumbo loaded with filet’. (That’s powdered Sassafras leaves used for thickening.) Oh, not everything is stuff to necessarily be proud of, like slavery for instance. I’ll guarantee you, though that even that topic is still a hot-button issue as Alabama ponders the meaning and results of apologizing for inequities of centuries ago here in this day and time.

Alabama has seen the discovery of Dauphin Island, a dark and bloody ground-turned-tourist haven once called ‘Massacre Island’ due to the number of human bones found there by the first settlers. Mobile, Alabama is the one true home of Mardi Gras in this nation, as folks here in my adopted home town will tell you in a real big hurry! This State was the home of the worst massacre of American citizens prior to Sept. 11th, 2001 with the Creek Indian attack on Fort Mims on August 30, 1813 and the brutal death of 250 to 400 settlers and militiamen. The Battle of Mobile Bay. Those of us old enough can recall other Alabama historical highlights. The Civil Rights Movement, Alabama’s contributions to the Space Race, the Tuskegee Airmen, and many more besides. If you’re a fan of television, in particularly the Discovery Channel’s ‘Deadliest Catch, then you might be interested to know that one of the starring fishing vessels, the 128 foot F/V Cornelia Marie, (Capt. Phil Harris), was build down here in Bayou La Batre’. Small world, ain’t it? (…and as a broke-down Navy puke I have to add “May God watch over all that go down to the Sea in ships” – especially those on the Bering Sea!)

I know what you’re thinking! ‘When will Bull shut up and move on to the Carnival?’ Well, I do tend to get long winded, but I like to tell stories and history is a passion of mine. Moreover, I’ve come to love Alabama nearly as much as the Blue Ridge Mountains of my childhood home. Forgive me if you will. The Bull has found it easier to ask forgiveness than permission over the near half-century I’ve roamed this good Earth.
Besides, a lot of this weeks Carnival is – in one way or another – about our home. Alabama!

Like I said, Alabama has her share of both good and bad. Our first contributor, (a newbie to our Carnival no less!), Leigh, of Key West or Bust, writes a short piece titled simply ‘Alabama’ where she fills us in on her thoughts on what she considers the good, the bad, and the ugly of this state. Leigh’s last line is this:

It’s not a bad place, but I really need a change.

The Bull wishes you well on your quest, Leigh! I’ve been in those shoes, and traveled far. Saw sights that left me awe-struck, too – but always there has been the call of home.

c.a.marks: Our fearless leader from Alabama Improper offers up not one, but two post for our perusal this week. Her first is titled ‘Demo Days’ and concerns one topic that The Bull is completely unequipped to speak about – Golf. Particularly golf clubs. Lady Cobra golf clubs. Now if we were talking about black powder, muzzleloading, long guns to fire golf balls I’d be right there with you! Well, those of you that follow that game should check it out as there are links to three or so Lady Cobra demo days. I can’t make heads or tails of it all…

Fortunately, c.a.marks comes back with something I can understand in ‘House Of Brews – Review’. Despite being a U.S. Navy veteran, I have never once let coffee pass my lips in this lifetime. (Oh, don’t worry – my sister, Taffney, makes up for any three people!) Blues, on the other hand is something I not only understand, but adore! The combination should be plenty interesting to most of our population. Sounds to me from her write-up that ‘Fearless Leader’ has pinned down a new hide-out in the House of Brews. Heck, if the music is as good as it is advertised The Bull may have to make the looong drive to Huntsville some weekend. Go read of her adventures there and of good great sounds and much coffee product. (Well, c.a.? A new ‘Improper Headquarters’?) If y’all are in the area of Huntsville go visit this joint and report back to me on the music.
You can ignore reporting on the coffee.

Along comes Scott himself from Scott Allan’s World. While his first entry this week has nothing in particular about the State of Alabama proper, it does concern one of the South’s most serious subjects: The 5 Second Rule.
If I’ve got to explain it then you are in desperate need of clicking over to Scott’s site and reading ‘5 second rule increased to 30 seconds’. You are also – very obviously – not from around here.
Funny the things we find important down here.

Scott also sends us a post one one of the topics near-and-dear to The Bull’s old heart. ‘What is amnesty?’ is a well thought out, well written post that makes much good common sense. Something sorely lacking in today’s U.S. Government I’m sad to say. Now that’s not to say I’m in total agreement with Scott on this topic. I drink no political party’s (or anyone else’s) Kool-Aid, but I know common sense when I hear it. (My biggest beef with the latest proposal in discussion is that it will become just another immigration law that will not be enforced. Just like all that came before it. I don’t like them trying to ‘backdoor’ a bill through on the citizens either! A shame on our Nation for refusing to secure her borders, and a pox on self-serving politicians and their houses!) Don’t listen to my bellowing. Go read this article! You will not regret doing so and you’ll be that much better informed.

While were on the topic of amnesty and immigration, Mad_Cow of Degree of Madness weighs in with the Daily Whip Notice in the post ‘Senate to debate immigration bill Monday’.
Pointed out in this post are the glaring holes in it. For instance locating the criminals, drug-runners, and potential terrorist that have walked through our ‘non-border’ to the South. Also noted is the lack of concern at securing the border at all. Mad_Cow did good. Go read it and get steamed. Getting pissed will do you, and the Country, some good!

I figure now is as good a time as any to throw out The Bull’s bellow for this weeks Carnival. I call the post ‘No Real Thought, Just My Gut Feeling’. Here at the Bull’s Pasture we’ve had a very busy month so far. We’ve got new furniture coming in for the calves, got the eldest calf working full time for the Summer, Lil’ Bull is coming down from South Carolina to spend a couple of months with the family, we had our first alligator come into the rescue and get released back into the wild within 12 hours (What a hoot!) and snakes-a-plenty, finally seem to have got the ‘Ex’ to see the wisdom of being honest with the Courts for a change, and Lady Beth is working every hour she can to make up for a huge loss to the monthly ‘Herd Income’. Even with all of that going on I try to get some bits of news. What I’ve been reading and hearing has not set well at all. This rush to the Presidential race is not a good thing for our Nation. These are dire times and this coming election is not one where we can afford to ‘experiment’, much less risk putting the wrong person – male or female – in the White House. Nor do we need the idiot of a certain past administration trying to maintain relevance by speaking out.

ALmod of The Alabama Moderate brings us back into our State in the post titled ‘Argo Serves Its Citizens’. The good folk of Argo are being served alright, but not in the way you might think. Here is something every citizen of every State should read – just as a ‘heads-up’. This is a short & sweet post, but has legs! The Birmingham Blues links to this post with The Argo Saga Continues…

Over on Between the Links we see the first post submitted by Dan. This one is called ‘One last word about the Beer Bill’. Ok. You’ve got my attention! Generally, I’m a non-drinker. Most beer is basically offensive to me. Simply because of the slack quality. Home-brewed and micro-brewed, well, that’s a different story! Dan gives us a taste of debate from the Alabama State House, via video, on legislation that would increase the alcohol content allowed to 14.9% ABV. The “Gourmet Beer Bill”. You see, Alabama limits the alcohol content of beer to 6% – one of only four states that do so. That means that we are denied one third of the World’s beer! No other alcohol product is so restricted. You need to go see and hear this video and the complete stupidity of the legislators. Ignorant fools…

Dan continues with ‘Sparks-hysteria’. The post concerns Jeff Vreeland of ‘Politics in Alabama’ who was quoted by Roll Call, a popular D.C. political newspaper. Vreeland discussed the possibility of Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks challenging Senator Jeff Sessions for his seat in 2008. I’m with Dan on this one. Sparks light will go out should he go against Jeff Sessions!

Dan further submits two further post to this weeks carnival in the forms of ‘Moving to Allen country’ and ‘So much for that’.

Finally, an offering from TD of the blog The Right Track. Very rarely does a post come along with such perfect timing. This post, ‘On Knowing When to Shut Up’, seems to be almost mystical in its timing. The Bull is also extremely impressed with TD’s control of dreamscape. I don’t think a wiffle bat would do it for me. I’d prefer a battle-axe, personally.
I’m not gonna give the storyline away any further. You’ll have to follow the link and read for yourself!

Well, midnight approaches and if The Bull is not in bed by the stroke of twelve he may not turn into a pumpkin (pronounced “punkin”), but Lady Beth will surely be unhappy. Something to be avoided at all cost! I hope I’ve not missed any links or trackbacks and most of all I do hope that you, Dear Reader, have enjoyed our time together here on the Alabama Bloggers Carnival for 21 May 2007. I know I’ve had a great time reading the submissions and telling tales. So, until next time we meet…

Keep your nose to the wind and an eye on you backtrail!

I have the Honor to Remain Your Most Humble Serv’t,
Bull.  End of Article

There comes a point for each of us, my friends, when the point of saturation is reached and our own guts won’t allow us to swallow even one more spoonful of the shyte we’re being forced to eat at the time.

That point has already been reached for The Bull concerning these jack-ass politicians. Hell, we’ve not even reached the mid-point of 2007 and it looks like were in mid-2008 as far as politics are concerned! From what I’m reading, the 2008 Presidential nominees will be decided by no later than February of next year. Sickening. Welcome to our media-driven America!

Both parties are filled with Hopefuls for the Office of President. Every cycle is like this, yet in every other cycle I recall there is only one or two of said Hopefuls that have any real chance. For example, our Liberals have only Clinton and Obama that have a snowball’s chance. The frightening bit comes when you look to our only real hope to avoid becoming a Socialist nation – the Conservatives. Yes, several big names. Giuliani, McCain, and Romney. Many smaller, less known names as well, like Paul. Every single one with his good points and every single one with something that will cost him the general election in 2008.

Am I saying that the Conservatives can not win? No. We were not supposed to win in 2000 or 2004, but we did – despite the Communist media. We can win. Just not the way we are going at the moment.

Conservatives are fragmented. We are disgusted by the back-room politics-as-usual going on in Washington. We are sick of being told and promised one thing only to have the polar opposite happen when the fight starts. Mostly, we are tired of so-called Conservative leaders refusing to fight. The “leaders” we have currently have about as much spine as red wigglers. (Those are fishing worms for you city folk.) It isn’t just the Conservative candidates either. The people are torn by causes such as abortion and gay rights when the most serious and deadly problems are things like border security and National Defense. Conservatives are more worried about petty issues like of what religious ilk a candidate is from rather than said candidate’s faith in the United States Constitution. Meanwhile the Liberals hold out two people that hold open disdain for our Constitution and at least one that salivates for a chance to gut the Bill of Rights!
What the hell, people!

Further, those of us not blinded by ‘American Idol‘ and the horseshyte thrown by the liberal media talking heads know that the Liberals – just like the Islamo-terrorist – have an agenda and are dedicated to having their way. They don’t appear to be patient, but they are. Every day that passes their ranks grow. How? From the government schools, the welfare rolls, and from Hollywood. our children are indoctrinated in Liberal-think from day one of Kindergarten. Don’t believe me? Then get your head out of your ass and look at what your child brings home. Take the time to ask what they saw, read, and talked about in class. Nowadays we even have our tax dollars going to schools teaching entirely Muslim values, including jihad. Yet, let so much as a Bible enter any other school and the Liberals are up in arms!

And on the issue of borders the Liberals continue right down the path you’d expect – side with the illegal aliens that break our laws daily, killing dozens if not hundreds of innocent American citizens. Let us also not forget the insult to those working so hard to get here in a legal fashion. The Bull is simply beside himself in frustration at the stupidity – if not out-right treachery – of it all!

Then, when you think you’ve heard it all, we find the following in the news this morning…

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. â€??? Former President Carter says President Bush’s administration is “the worst in history” in international relations, taking aim at the White House’s policy of pre-emptive war and its Middle East diplomacy.

Carter?

Carter has the unmitigated gall to call Bush’s Presidency “the worst in history”? Either time has finally brought the former President Carter’s brain to the ‘Land of Alzheimer’s’, or he simply thinks that those of us that lived through his miserable four years have forgotten about 20+% interest rates, gas shortages, and the total ineptitude when dealing with thugs.
Carter should go back to driving nails in small houses and shut up. He was – and is – as much of a waste of flesh as any former President could be. Short of Hillary, that is…

What is the answer? I don’t know. The polls of late are not exactly encouraging, save for one line. That is the line indicating a fair showing for a man not even in the race. The Bull speaks of none other than Fred Thompson. Polls show Fred at a constant 10-15% even without announcing. However, I feel that the longer Fred Thompson waits from this date forward that the weaker he will both look and become to the populace. Please, Fred! Make up your mind. For the sake of America and our Freedom I pray you do indeed run. Announce today!

Meanwhile, America herself must look back and determine that continued existence will give us plenty of time to deal with the minor issues. We must seal our borders. We must fight and defeat terrorist wherever we can find them. We must halt the indoctrination of our children by Liberal loonies and the Hollywood freaks.

Yes, 2008 has arrived early. Yet it is not too early for all Right-minded, Constitution-believing Americans to stand up and be heard, and to make a huge difference. We must reject the Liberal Left and their anti-American agenda. We shall either stand together as a Nation, or we shall surely fall into Socialism.

Where do you stand?

Bull, out.  End of Article

LYNCHBURG, Va. ?? The Rev. Jerry Falwell, the television evangelist who founded the Moral Majority and used it to mold the religious right into a political force, died Tuesday shortly after being found unconscious in his office at Liberty University. He was 73.

The passing of the Reverend Jerry Falwell is marked here at Bull’s Pasture with some sadness. In years past – more than I care to recall – Jerry and I were often found with our horns locked in near-mortal combat over matters of Faith and Freedom of Religion.

Now my old adversary is dead.

My condolences go out to Jerry’s family, the students of Liberty University, and the residents of Lynchburg, VA. The Bull knows he will be truly missed.  End of Article

The following is a news story that came along the AP wire about crime in Japan.

Ahhh! Japan! (officially 日本国 Nihon-koku or Nippon-koku) That nation and her people have always been a favorite of The Bull’s. Particularly of interest later in life has been the Okinawa Prefecture. (沖縄県, Okinawa-ken) Originally not part of Japan, but more on that at a later date.

On to the news story…

TOKYO ?? A teenage boy carrying a severed head walked into a Japanese police station Tuesday saying he killed his mother, the latest in a series of grisly dismemberments that have horrified a nation renowned for its low crime rates.

A remarkably low crime rate for a nation with some 128,085,000, (2005 estimate), souls packed onto 377,873 km². In other words, Japan has the 10th largest population on the planet, but is the 62nd in size. To further compress the population, about 70% to 80% of the country is forested, mountainous, and unsuitable for agricultural, industrial, or residential use. That makes for a tight squeeze in anyones book! Somehow though, be it the believe both Shinto (the indigenous religion of Japan) and Buddhism or mere common courtesy, the Japanese have developed into the second largest economy on the planet while maintaining one of the lowest crime rates. All despite the over-crowding.

The 17-year-old suspect led officers to his house in northern Fukushima prefecture (state) and pointed out his headless mother on her futon mattress, with a frank, “It’s in here,” Kyodo News reported. He told police he beheaded his mother on the eve of her 47th birthday while she slept, and added, “It didn’t matter who I killed,” Kyodo reported. Police confirmed the arrest.

While dismemberment crimes are not unique to Japan, experts say such cases are on the rise as Japan grapples with the fallout of a decade of economic malaise. Alienation and a trend toward objectifying fellow humans is also fueling the violence. “There have been a high number of incidents involving dismembered bodies and I certainly think there is a chain reaction going on,” said Susumu Oda, an expert in criminal psychology at Japan’s Tezukayamagakuin University.

A “chain reaction”? Hmm… Let The Bull look deeper into this story.
The AP news story list four such dismemberment cases in the last two years and one from 1997. The Bull has not been able to find reference to any others. That is not to say that there aren’t others, just that I couldn’t find reference to them. Frankly, more people are killed in this country every year from animals that are not even native to this continent! Hardly a “chain reaction”. While the Japanese economy isn’t growing at the rate it has ever since WWII, the Japanese people should stop and look at all they have accomplished and where they stand on the World Stage and be proud.

There is a little bit of “Liberal-think” going on over there too. Also a profound pain among many for the atrocities committed during the war. Atrocities, both large and small, occurred on every front of that – and every – war. Yes, the Japanese military was guilty of many of the very worst. Let us – and especially the fine Japanese people – remember that while we should never forget our past, we should also not place the burden of blame upon the shoulders of those that were not involved or succeeding generations.

While such gruesome killings have outraged the nation, some experts caution that the dismembering of victims is not always a symptom of deeper social dysfunction. “In many cases, they killed in a desperate situation and carried or hid the body by dismembering it to avoid being caught for homicide,” said Yoshikazu Yuuma, expert in criminal psychology at Saitama Institute of Technology outside Tokyo.

That the entire nation is outraged by such crimes when they occur is, in The Bull’s mind at least, a very good sign that the Japanese have a very healthy outlook on crime and definitely not a “social dysfunction”. On that last sentence in the quote above: Exactly! Would it be ‘normal’ for someone who has committed murder to go an announce such in the streets? Of course not, you silly AP writer! ‘Tis human nature to hide that which we are most ashamed of or that which will end our freedom.

Bottom line still remains that Japan has a very low crime rate, a remarkably low homicide rate, and an unbelievably low rate of psychotic freaks in their population.
 Perhaps we should ALL eat more fish and converting to Shinto and Buddhism!

Nah! The Southern Baptist would never go for it.

Over on the Sixgunner forums ‘Worldskipper’ posted the following photos of a Ruger Blackhawk – possibly the strongest single action revolver ever made – he managed to destroy. I asked his permission to use the photos and he replied: ‘Go right ahead. Just be sure to quote the “mistake” to me, don’t want any others taking credit for my stupidity.’

Well, ok! Here is his post in its entirety.

Because if you get distracted, (even by the love of your life), you can rapidly disassemble a Ruger Blackhawk.

Broken Ruger #1

Broken Ruger #2

This was the 7th round shot out of a brand new gun, cowboy level load. If the round was like the others it would have been a 13,000 psi load, about 800 fps.

Broken Ruger #3

The theory is that I put in a double charge of Vectan A0 (about the speed of HERCO) of 19.2 gr under a 250 speer SWC. Pressure was somewhere over 60,000 psi! Single base powders do not have a linear pressure curve!

Ruger is being very, very generous and replacing the gun, I’m out a pair of ivories, a Super Blackhawk hammer, and a pair of undies. A very good lesson, cost a little, learned a lot, and especially, no one was hurt.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL OUT THERE WHEN YOU LOAD!

Broken Ruger #4

Thank you Bill Ruger for over-designing your gun.

Roger that, Worldskipper! Many, many, thanks to Bill Ruger for his fine firearms, even if some do call them ‘overbuilt’. When it comes to safety, nothing beats a Ruger.

Folks, take care in reloading. Never let yourself be distracted – by anything or anyone – while loading powder charges. Not every gun is as stout or dependable as a Ruger.

Still seems to me to be a waste of prison space when a 2.5 cent, .22 caliber bullet to the back of the head would be so very much cheaper and effective, but The Bull doesn’t get to make the rules – yet. Anyway, looks like the Feds have nailed another child-molesting bastard. Our neighbors to the North turned him over to the U.S.. Easy for them to do, I’m sure. Who wants that kind of trash in their country?

Here’s the story from Fox News Online….

LOS ANGELES â€??? Canadian authorities have arrested a California man who was on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted” list for alleged sex crimes against children, the FBI said.

Richard Steve Goldberg, 61, of Long Beach, was arrested Saturday in Montreal at an address provided by a tipster who recognized the fugitive from the FBI’s Web site, said Laura Eimiller of the FBI in Los Angeles. He had been on the run for about six years, she said.

Long Beach authorities claim Goldberg engaged in sexual acts with girls under the age of 10 in 2001. He also produced images of the sex acts, which were later found on his computer, according to the FBI.

Goldberg was being held by Canadian authorities for violating Canadian immigration laws and was scheduled to be in court on Monday, Eimiller said.

Goldberg was expected to be extradited to the United States. He will face state and federal charges, including sexual exploitation of children, unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, six counts of lewd acts upon a child and two counts of possession of child pornography, Eimiller said.

My guess is that the pedophiles have been doing the sort of thing listed below for decades. They would call up their pervert buddies, place an order for a particular age/race child, and somewhere an innocent child disappears – never to be seen again.

Well, the Times-Online had the following story on May 9th speaking on just such events in the disappearance of a beautiful little girl. Read it below. Then get mad and do something to help those of us determined to rid our society of these sub-human creatures that stalk our children!

Paedophile ring focus to Madeleine hunt
By Thomas Catán in Praia da Luz and Stewart Tendler in London

Portuguese police are now working on the assumption that Madeleine McCann was abducted “to order? by an international pedophile network, after narrowing the focus of their six-day investigation.

Detectives have now discarded a range of other possibilities, including the theory that the British toddler could have walked out of her Algarve hotel room by herself or was kidnapped for adoption, Portuguese newspapers have reported.

“Everything points to a kidnapping,? a person close to the investigation told Correio da Manhã, adding that police were now exclusively investigating the possibility that she had been captured by a child abuse network. Police sources quoted anonymously by several other local newspapers said much the same thing.

Citing local laws, Portuguese police have refused to speak publicly about the state of their investigation. But recent moves have pointed to a renewed focus on international pedophile networks.

British officers specializing in child abduction cases have flown out to the Algarve. One of them, Detective Superintendent Graham Hill, is a veteran of missing child investigations and was one of the senior detectives in the hunt for 13-year old Milly Dowler, who vanished in March 2002. Her body was found in September that year, left in countryside in Hampshire. No one has ever been charged with the murder.

Mr Hill, who has been working for the Britain’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, was also a senior investigator in the hunt for Antoni Imiela, the serial rapist jailed in 2004 for attacks including five in Surrey. British detectives have also handed their Portuguese counterparts a list of people on the UK’s sex offenders register who have traveled recently to the country.

The growing certainty of investigators that three-year-old Madeleine was taken by child abusers will do nothing to console her distraught parents.

It would not be the first time that a child taken from Portugal has ended up in the grip of a pedophile ring. In 1998, an 11-year-old boy called Rui Pedro Mendonça vanished while walking home from school in the northern Portuguese town Lousada. A month later, hopes were raised when he was sighted with a middle-aged man in Disneyland in Paris. Then three years later, his mother’s worst fears were realized.

Horrific images of Rui Pedro being sexually abused were reportedly uncovered during an international police operation that cracked a global pedophile network. More than 200 pedophiles in 13 countries had exchanged more than 750,000 images of children through a private internet club called Wonderland.

Analysis showed that 1,236 children had been subjected to abuse that officers described as “unimaginable?. Some were babies, raped by their abusers. Others were sexually abused live, to order, online. Officers described weeping as they cataloged the pictures and being haunted for years afterwards.

The Portuguese boy’s mother, Filomena Teixera, flew to Switzerland to view the pictures and was apparently able to identify her son. But he has never been found. The trail has gone cold and investigators fear that may have been murdered to cover up the abuse. Now the disappearance of Madeleine has brought those agonizing memories flooding back.

“When I saw the news about the disappearance of the English girl, I was terrified,? Ms Teixera told the 24 Horas newspaper. “I immediately thought of my son, even though the cases are different. And I thought of Madeleine’s parents, the anguish they are suffering.?

Ms Teixera said she has had psychiatric treatment for 8 hours a day for the past four years, since her father died. She still refuses to believe that her son, who would now be 20 years old, could have died.

“When I stop believing he is alive, I lose all my strength,? she said. “My brain doesn’t allow me to think the he is dead.?

Six other children are listed as having disappeared in Portugal. Not all are suspected of having been snatched by pedophiles, but one case in particular has drawn attention for its startling similarities. Rui Pereira was 13 years old when he vanished in 1999 — just a few months after Rui Pedro — from the northern town of Famalicão. There was later a reported sighting of the boy in Switzerland, in the company of two Italians.

His mother, Laurinda Meira, also continues to believe he is alive. “He must be tall,? she said two months ago, when he should have been celebrating his 22nd birthday. “I would like to open the door one day and find him there.?

All his clothes and possessions remain in the exactly the same place as they were when he vanished from their lives. “I am sure that he is alive, but not totally well? she told Portuguese daily, Journal de Notícias. “He could be into drugs, or prostitution or as a slave, we just don’t know.?

Portuguese police traveled to Switzerland in 2003 to check through database of pedophile images, but they have so far drawn a blank. The family has strongly criticized the Portuguese authorities, saying that the police did little to find their so. Supporters also mounted street protests when the courts tried to close the case.

Child protection campaigners have alleged that a culture of corruption and complacency in Portugal is allowing such kidnappings to continue unabated. The founder of the Switzerland-based group Innocence in Danger has said she had tried to set up an office in Portugal but it gave up because of the reluctance of the authorities.

Homayra Sellier said after Madeleine’s disappearance last week that Portugal is a country in which “the corruption has gone so high that there’s nothing we can doâ€??.

“The fact that the girl (Madeleine) was kidnapped from her bed shows how bad things are.?

Kidnapped from her bed…

You know, if the government and law enforcement really wanted to help do something about these scum, then they would place a bounty on all pedophiles. Were I a wealthy man I’d do so myself.

THIS MUST END!

Navy Commissions USS Hawaii

Navy News | PO1 Ira J. Elinson | May 07, 2007
Groton, CT – Under clear blue New England skies, the Navy’s newest attack submarine, USS Hawaii (SSN 776) was commissioned May 5 on the Thames River at Naval Submarine Base New London, in Groton, Conn.

The ceremony, complete with hula dancers, war canoes, and leis, brought North Shore flavor to the shores of New England. Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, sponsor of Hawaii, spoke the words that the Navy, and especially the crew, had waited to hear since its christening in June 2006. In a time-honored Navy tradition, Lingle directed, “Man our ship and bring her to life!?

The third submarine of the Virginia class, SSN 776 recognizes the tremendous support the Navy has enjoyed from the people of the Aloha State and honors the rich heritage of submarines in the Pacific theater.

“Most people, when they hear the word Hawaii, they immediately conjure up pictures of beautiful beaches, lovely dancers and moonlit nights,? said Hawaii Sen. Daniel K. Inouye. “Hawaii is all that and more: Our sons and daughters have participated in every war since we became part of the United States.?

“While most of the Western Pacific is, for the most part free, ships like Hawaii and the men who serve on her will help ensure that freedom for future generations,? said Adm. Gary Roughead, Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, as he delivered the ceremony’s principal address.

Hawaii has improved stealth, sophisticated surveillance capabilities and special warfare enhancements that will enable it to meet the Navy’s multi-mission requirements. Hawaii’s capabilities include: anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, special forces delivery and support, and covert mine warfare. In addition to these mission areas, Hawaii will be able to strike targets ashore with precision Tomahawk cruise missiles and conduct covert long-term surveillance of land areas, coastal waters or other maritime forces. With enhanced communications connectivity, the submarine also will provide unique, fully-integrated strike group and joint task force support.

“People who tour the ship speak of the technology, computer displays and fiber optics,â€?? said Lingle, “but it is the spirit of its Sailors that makes this ship great.â€??

Capt. David A. Solms, a native of Colorado Springs, Colo., is the ship’s commanding officer, leading a crew of approximately 134 officers and enlisted personnel.

The 7,800-ton Hawaii was built by the shipbuilder team of General Dynamics Electric Boat, Groton, Conn., and Northrop Grumman Newport News, Va. The submarine is 377 feet in length, has a beam of 34 feet, and can operate at more than 25 knots submerged. Hawaii is designed with a reactor plant that will not require refueling during the planned life of the ship – reducing lifecycle costs while increasing underway time.

Hawaii will complete a post-commissioning shakedown period and continue readying for its first deployment from Naval Submarine Base New London. The ship will eventually be homeported in Hawaii in 2009.  End of Article

New Russian ‘Boomer’
by Norman Polmar | April 30, 2007

Russia has launched a new strategic missile submarine, the Yuri Dolgorukiy, to be armed with the Bulava ballistic missile. This weapon is modified from the land-launched Topol-M missile (given the NATO designation SS-27).

The launching took place at Severodvinsk, site of the massive Sevmash shipyard on Russia’s Arctic coast, on April 15, 2007. The last ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) to be completed in the then-Soviet Union was a Project 667BDRM (Delta IV) in 1984.

Two additional submarines of this design are reported to be under construction at Sevmash — the Alexandr Nevskiy and the Vladimir Monomakh. A fourth unit is planned.

Significantly, the Yuri Dolgorukiy is not the submarine of that name that was laid down as Project 995 on November 2, 1996. The construction of that submarine was halted on January 22, 1998, when less than five percent complete. That program was canceled because of technical and financial difficulties. The submarine was to have been armed with a planned R-39UTTH (NATO SS-N-28 Grom) missile, which was itself canceled in 1998 due to problems.

Subsequently, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Vladimir Kuroyedov, said that a “redesignedâ€?? Yuri Dolgorukiy would be completed in 2007. The new submarine employs the bow and stern pressure hull sections — including the propulsion section — of the Project 971 (NATO Akula II)-class submarine Kuguar. Work on that torpedo-attack submarine(SSN )was also stopped after the collapse of the Soviet Union, making her components available for the new SSBN.

Similarly, the second unit, the Alexandr Nevskiy, is being constructed with sections of the fourth Akula II SSN, which had been assigned the name Rys’. Some components for the other new SSBNs are being shipped to Severodvinsk from the Komsomol’sk shipyard in the Far East, which previously built nuclear-propelled submarines.

This use of SSN components to produce ballistic missile submarines is similar to the U.S. Navy’s construction of its first ballistic missile submarines of the George Washington (SSBN 598) class using the plans and some components of the Skipjack (SSN 585) attack submarines.(Despite numerous stories to the contrary, the George Washington was not built by taking an SSN on the building ways and cutting her in half and inserting a missile section to produce the nation’s first SSBN.)

And exactly what is America’s answer to this?

Well, here is something you don’t see every day. A Bull out on a limb – a very thin limb!

As you know, if you’ve read this blog long enough, The Bull suffers from my health related problems. Most of these problems involve the spine and the spinal cord. The short version is limited physical strength as compared to previous levels, limited sleep, and unlimited pain. Several surgeries failed to return my back to ‘as issued’ condition. Damned near left me in a chair for life. However, I’m too bull-headed for that! (Proving my dear deceased Dad correct about my character.)

The result of all these surgeries, lack of sleep, and pain is a severe ‘bulking up’ of The Bull. That may be too light a statement. Try this…

The Bull has become fat. Period.

I’ve got to loose this weight! I’m not looking to become ‘Kalifornia-skinny’. I’m not even looking to reach the weight that the US Navy wanted me to be. I’m looking to lose thirty eight pounds (38 lbs.) That will bring me to 225 pounds. That is ten pounds below what I weighed fresh out of Boot Camp. When I enlisted in the Navy I weighed 216 pounds. The ‘powers-that-be’ thought I should weigh 185 pounds, so they fed me the stuff food itself eats and worked me twice as hard. The end result was an addition of 19 pounds of solid muscle. (They simply wrote out a waver and sent me to Submarine School in Groton, CT.) Since back then I was solid muscle and nearly an inch and a half taller, I feel that 225 lbs is a decent target. We shall see…

So that this plan doesn’t simply fade away into the archives The Bull has posted a Traineo widget in the sidebar to your right that will show my progress towards the goal weight. Keep an eye on it and feel free to razz me as much as you see fit in order to keep my nose-ring to the grindstone.

Bull, out.
