Strange Sonic Boom or Quake in Mobile, AL | The Bull Speaks!

At 1430 hours on this date a strangely long sonic boom – or an oddly mild earth tremor – shook our part of the Greater Mobile, AL area right down to the core. The event was also felt at Lady Beth’s place of employment some 6 miles from The Pasture as the crow flies.

Shelved items shook, photos hung on the walls became askew, and the house was rattled on its foundation. Duration: 3 to 5 seconds. More odd is that the animals, including the parrot and the Great Danes were quiet the entire time. The only critter that showed any fear during the event was our Shih-Tzu, Ruby. After the event all of the creatures are showing stress. In fact, the Amazon parrot won’t shut up!

No physical damage noted.

Event was reported to the USGS for review. We are wondering if it was possibly a meteor entering the atmosphere…

If you have any info on this event, please leave a comment!

Bull, out!

I felt it too on Dec. 2nd and felt another one today at around 1:30pm. It was very loud and shook the house even more than last time. My dogs barked afterward and were upset by the unusual event. I live in West Mobile.

I work just off of Cottage Hill / University and we experienced it here on the 2nd, and again just now on the 22nd. Also, we felt something a few days ago, possibly to coincide with the 16th event (i don’t recall the precise day) at my home in mid-town Leinkauf district. Although, we do experience occasional booming sounds and slight “tremors” frequently there, but have been unable to positively identify or confirm thier origin. Few people we ask about seemed to have noticed, until after we informed them of it; then they begin paying attention more and have begun to notice them, also. Perhaps it’s trains, or the airfield testing, or the shipyard. But we live far enough from each to not feel the physical tremors of thier activity – unless it is significant and noteworthy. I do know that Mobile, like many places, does experience earth tremors from time to time – it’s just nature’s course. Still, it is puzzling, especially when I can find very little information that anyone else experienced it.
